CMT Award Fashion Face-Off: Hayden Panettiere vs. Ashley Greene

The 2012 CMT Awards didn't merely pit country singer against country singer across a broad spectrum of categories.

It also set up an intense fashion face-off between a hero and a vampire.

That's right, both Hayden Panettiere - who will show off her own singing voice on the upcoming ABC drama Nashville - and Ashley Greene walked the red carpet at the event, each looking pretty and each angling for your vote. But who will actually get it?

Compare. Contrast. Decide.

Walker to mend political divide with brats, beer

MADISON, Wis. (AP) ? Gov. Scott Walker, fresh from becoming the nation's first governor ever to survive a recall election, wants to go about mending Wisconsin's political divide in an egalitarian way: over brats and beers.

Walker defeated Democratic Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett on Tuesday for the second time in year and a half, turning back a recall effort that began with the collection of more than 900,000 signatures seeking his ouster. It was only the third gubernatorial recall in U.S. history.

Now the rising Republican star is focusing his message on what lies ahead. His term runs through 2014, and he faces a state that's still bitterly divided over his move to end collective bargaining rights for most public employees.

"It's time to put our differences aside and find ways to work together to move Wisconsin forward," Walker said in an interview minutes after his victory. "I think it's important to fix things, but it's also important to make sure we talk about it and involve people in the process."

Walker planned to invite all members of the Legislature to meet as soon as next week over burgers, brats and "maybe a little bit of good Wisconsin beer."

"The first step is just bringing people together and figuring out some way if we can thaw the ice," he said.

Democrats, including Barrett, pledged to work together, too. But the wounds are deep following the rancor of the recall, which was spurred by Walker's surprise proposal to go after public employee unions.

"It is up to all of us, their side and our side, to listen. To listen to each other," Barrett said.

State Rep. Peter Barca, Democratic minority leader in the Assembly, said a lot of work remains to heal Wisconsin.

"I hope Gov. Walker understands and stays true to his pledge to build consensus and be more inclusive going forward," Barca said.

With nearly all precincts reporting, Walker had 53 percent of the vote, compared with 46 percent for Barrett. The margin of victory was wider than many expected and slightly better than Walker's 5.8 percentage-point victory over Barrett in the 2010 race.

Democrats and organized labor spent millions to remove Walker, but found themselves hopelessly outspent by Republicans from across the country who donated record-setting sums to Walker.

Walker's win sets the stage for what's expected to be a hard-fought presidential battle.

Both sides in the presidential contest warned against reading too much into Tuesday's results, but Walker's solid victory is a warning for President Barack Obama in a state he comfortably carried in 2008 and where Democrats have won in six straight presidential elections. Romney has reason to be optimistic, given Walker's own vigorous ground game, the framework of which he will inherit.

Still, Wisconsin Democratic Party Chairman Mike Tate showed no remorse for pursuing the recall, which was pushed both by powerful union leaders and citizens across the state with little or no political experience.

"This is a fight worth having," Tate said. "Some things are worth losing over."

Walker entered the national spotlight last year when he unveiled plans to plug a $3.6 billion budget shortfall in part by taking away the union rights of most public workers and requiring them to pay more for their health insurance and pension benefits. It was one of his first moves in office, and it was explosive.

Democrats and labor leaders saw it as a political tactic designed to gut the power of his opposition. State Senate Democrats left Wisconsin for three weeks in a sort of filibuster, as tens of thousands of teachers, state workers and others rallied at the Capitol in protest.

But the tea-party supported fiscal conservative remained steadfast. Walker believed his plan would help him control the state budget, and his opponents could not stop Republicans who control the state Legislature from approving his plans.

Walker went on to sign into law several other measures that fueled the recall, including repealing a law giving discrimination victims more ways to sue for damages, making deep cuts to public schools and higher education, and requiring voters to show photo identification at the polls.

Both sides mobilized thousands of people and millions of dollars to influence voters, whom polls showed were more divided than ever. Signs calling for Walker's removal and those supporting the 44-year-old son of a minister dotted the state's landscape all spring at a time normally devoid of political contests.

More than $66 million was spent on the race as of May 21, making it easily the most expensive in Wisconsin history. That money was spent on an all-out barrage of television ads, direct mail, automated calls and other advertising that permeated the state for months.

Also Tuesday, Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch and at least three Republicans in state Senate races survived recalls. Unofficial results showed the Democrat ahead in the other Senate race, the outcome of which will determine which party controls the Senate at least through the end of the year.

Walker avoided gloating in his speech and offered his adversaries a fresh start.

"Now it is time to move on and move forward in Wisconsin," Walker said in his speech. "Tomorrow is the day after the election, and tomorrow we are no longer opponents."

'If racism keeps rearing its head'

Associated Press Sports

updated 1:57 p.m. ET June 6, 2012

GRAHAM DUNBAR

AP Sports Writer

WARSAW, Poland (AP) -UEFA president Michel Platini promised that referees will stop European Championship matches if players suffer abuse from fans, as questions on racism in Poland and Ukraine dominated a news conference Wednesday to launch the tournament.

Platini said UEFA has empowered referees to "temporarily stop the game and finally cancel the game if this racism keeps rearing its head."

Concern was fueled by a British television program last week showing discrimination and violent incidents at recent club matches in the co-host nations.

Ahead of the Euro 2012 kick off on Friday, the head of a Europe-wide campaign against discrimination in football acknowledged it posed more potential problems than previous tournaments.

"There is no question we are worried about this tournament more than any other," Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) director Piara Powar told reporters on the sidelines of Platini's meeting.

UEFA invited the FARE network to help select a group of 31 expert spotters who will monitor every team's fans for any banners, chants and behavior inside stadiums which breach UEFA's zero-tolerance anti-discrimination policy.

Powar said that Platini "understands what is going on," and that a team could even be expelled from the tournament for a third conviction from UEFA's independent judicial bodies.

Four years ago, UEFA fined the Croatia national association 20,000 Swiss francs (then $19,600; ?12,450) for its fans neo-Nazi flags and chants during a Euro 2008 quarterfinals loss against Turkey in Vienna, Austria. At Euro 2012, Croatia will play Spain, Italy and Ireland in a group based in Poland.

Platini said he had not seen the BBC documentary, titled "Stadiums of Hate," and initially suggested that Poland and Ukraine offered a soft target for criticism days before they hosted the tournament.

However, he acknowledged that racism was a problem for society across Europe - including in England and his home country, France.

"There is more and more nationalism in Europe. You can feel this at a number of football matches," Platini said in French. "There are some worries, some big worries, but a lot has been done thanks to football."

Platini said UEFA would "always" support the decisions of its referees, who were given authority three years ago to respond to hostile incidents by halting matches.

"We will stop the game if there are problems because I think racism is the worst of this," he said.

However, Platini warned Italy forward Mario Balotelli that he would get a yellow card for fulfilling a recent threat to walk off the field to protest any abuse.

"It's not the player, Mr. Balotelli, who is in charge" of refereeing a match, the UEFA president said.

UEFA referees director Pierluigi Collina said later that the 12 match officials at Euro 2012 had briefed the 16 competing teams on standards expected at the tournament.

"Referees have a protocol so they know what they have to do. The referees are ready," Collina said.

Platini also downplayed questions relating to Ukraine's record on human rights and its jailing of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko for abuse of office.

The government in Platini's home country has said its officials will boycott matches in Ukraine - where Les Bleus will play - to protest the treatment of Tymoshenko.

"UEFA does not get involved in politics," Platini insisted. "Western countries can boycott if they want to. It's my role to simply organize the competition."

Anna Betbeze's Painted Flotaki Carpets Come To MASS MoCA ...

Anna Betbeze's pigmented Flotaki carpets don't look like anything you have ever seen before. They kind of resemble a muppet carcass, or perhaps a tie-dyed towel that has been rotting since 1965, but they certainly don't look like your average museum piece.

rs7206_2012_anna betbeze_017lpr

The artist takes the already visually lush Greek rugs and proceeds to cut, tear, and burn away excess material. She then saturates them with acid dye, Manic Panic, beet juice, and other pigments before putting them in the washing machine and hitting the "on" switch. Afterward, she hangs them on nails, and the decaying rugs begin to sag and fold over time. Through this act of mutilating her rugs past the point of recognition, they become something else entirely. Her last exhibition was entitled "Moss Garden" and this one continues to channel imagery of mold, moss, foliage, fungus and rust. The carpet graveyard becomes a playground for color and texture to spawn and grow, resembling fuzzy coral wisps swaying under the sea.

The strange breed of sculpture has been compared to Robert Morris's work, whose felt sculptures similarly use gravity as a medium. In an interview with ARTINFO, Betbeze herself described these felt sculptures as among her favorite things. Others have mentioned Helen Frankenthaler, who stained pigment into raw canvas. But Betbeze's work stands out in its abused aesthetic; rather than a created work her works look like they have been beaten to a pulp. Underneath the bruises, fungus and rot, a new object is born. The works, which must be seen in person to fully grasped, are both attractive and repulsive, luscious and lonely.

Betbeze's new works will show at MASS MoCA until November 5, 2012.

Orange San Diego Medfield phone: a closer look at Computex 2012

Well what do we have here? Yes, it's the Orange San Diego we first saw at Mobile World Congress and it's going on sale in the UK today for £200. This isn't just yet another Android smartphone, but one of the first Medfield-based handsets on the market. We caught this pre-production unit chilling out at the Intel booth here at Computex 2012 and decided to go up close and personal. First impressions? It's thin, light and feels great in the hand thanks to a pleasant soft-touch back. The Gigabyte-made device packs a 4-inch glass-capacitive 1024x600-pixel LCD (that's 300dpi), an 8-megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash, a 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z2460 CPU, 1GB of RAM and 16GB of built-in storage.

While the screen looks decent enough, it falls somewhere in the middle of the pack in terms of contrast and viewing angles. The phone features Android 2.3.7 (Gingerbread) and runs most apps from the Google Play store directly via an emulation layer. Performance matched prior benchmarks and was on-par with current mid-range ARM-based Android handsets -- the experience was mostly smooth, but we noticed some lag when scrolling and zooming pages in the web browser. Battery life remains the major outstanding question when it comes to Medfield handsets, so expect more details once we have our very own review unit. In the meantime, check out the gallery below and stay tuned for our hands-on video.

Effective Online Marketing Strategy | Online Success Articles

?

Employing an online marketing strategy is essential for business success today. Whether your business relies upon foot traffic and local customers or is globally recognized, consumers need to have access to information about your company online. Potential customers often conduct research before venturing out into the brick and mortar stores, in addition to making online purchases frequently. Below are some tips to incorporate into an effective advertising campaign.

1. Design a web promotion plan with essential web design development. Having a website is ideal, however, using a blog as a jump-start can be equally effective. The main purpose of a business blog or website is to generate interest in your products and services. This is best accomplished through first establishing a brand presence online.

2. Establish directory listings. By adding your company to appropriate directories, the exposure your business receives can be exponential. Organizations such as your local chamber of commerce, and other individual business organizations maintain directories that many professionals utilize to find products and services. Therefore, listing your company in these directories can be another effective marketing tool.

3. Participate in social media. Join the online conversation using Facebook, Twitter and Digg. Posting comments on applicable forums and blogs are all opportunities to market online. Consider posting information on YouTube, Flicker and other popular networking sites. Be astute about what is posted, however. Social media marketing requires more subtle techniques than with traditional online advertising. Respond to commentary with intelligent and useful information for the best results.

4. Engage online networking. When it comes to networking online, LinkedIn is specifically designed to connect professionals. Because of its appeal and credibility, it is possible to accelerate success in ways that were before not possible. With in excess of 40 million members in more than 200 countries and territories around the world, it is a very powerful marketing tool online, providing opportunities to connect with colleagues, potential customers and partners. Also, communities such as Yahoo Groups has a small business section including approximately 40,000 varied sections. All of these entities have the potential to become continual resources and clients.

5. Enlist email marketing. The development and use of an email list including all of your valuable connections and contacts is one of the most effective marketing methods available. Its cost is extremely low, given that time is the main expenditure. With all of the effective email software programs available, that cost can be minimized. Email is also a great tool for relationship building with colleagues and customers. This can accelerate repeat business, while promoting word-of-mouth efforts.

6. Create newsletters. Sending newsletters out via email and to individual contacts is an excellent way to build a reputation as an expert or industry leader. As a respected company within a business sector, this can prove to be invaluable in growing your business. Every newsletter that is sent out is an opportunity to provide your business information and a link to your website. It is also an effective way to inform customers about special deals, updates and events about your company.

7. Consider online advertising. Google AdWords is one of the most well known pay-per-click marketing programs. This program allows users to choose specified keywords which are associated with your products and services. Consumers searching on Google who use one of these keywords will see one of your ads in the results. As a result, many of these consumers may visit your website which could convert to a sale.

When the above tips are utilized, they can be very instrumental in developing an effective online marketing strategy.

Business Real Estate Advice | Real Estate, Mortgages, Loans

Investors buy commercial real estate for the purpose of generating profit. Profit generated from commercial real estate property is rental based, as it is given to other who pay a fixed fee for living in or using the property; or capital based, as it is sold for capital. If you wish to participate in the commercial real estate market, the tips in this article should help you.

If you own commercial property, make sure you go out of your way to keep it a clean and safe place. If you have renters you want them to know that you care. If they think you don?t care they will not keep your house as nice as you would like. They would assume you don?t mind.

Make sure that you find out the crime statistics in an area before purchasing a commercial property. Criminals often target commercial properties as they usually contain large quantities of valuable goods inside. If an area has a high crime rate, it could be difficult to find retailers who want to rent your commercial property purchase.

Conduct thorough inspections of the building and property before signing anything. Take the time to look into the books and records for the property as well as the structure itself. Inspect the roof, interior, HVAC system, and the environmental records to be sure that you are not going to regret your decision to purchase.

Be sure that you have all of your documents ready before trying to find financing. The documents need to be up to date and a solid reflection of the true potential of the property. Make sure you have forecasts for profits and estimates of expenses. Being prepared will go a long way towards convincing a financier to work with you.

Put an advertisement in your local paper. These tend to be fairly inexpensive, but are also seen by many prospective clients, buyers, and sellers throughout your local area. Remember, many people (especially older people) do not use the Internet. Use this ad to your advantage by letting people know as many details about the property as you can, and give them an easy way to contact you.

When dealing with commercial real estate, you will have to develop a plan, well in advance. This will allow you to establish exactly what you want, so that you will have more time to scope out what is available to you. A solid plan of action helps to benefit you significantly.

To manage your commercial real estate building wisely, make sure the property does not experience a high degree of vacancies and you will be able to control your cash flow well. If you have a lot of tenants in the building, it?s a good idea to write the leases in such a way that they do not all expire at once. If all the leases run out at the same time, you may find yourself with an empty building!

Take a critical eye to the property and its potential before making a decision to buy. It is easy to get caught up in the dreams of what can be but make sure that those dreams are solidly grounded in reality. It may have a load of potential but if it?s going to take you 10 years and more debt than you can handle to get it there you may need to just walk away.

Before you start working with a real estate broker, make sure you have the same goals. A real estate firm?s best interest might be to have you buy property that is hard to sell, or to have you disappear from the market altogether. Make sure you want the same thing, and do a background check on the firm you are considering working with.

As stated before, investors use commercial real estate to make a profit through rental or capital means. You can use the tips in the article to help you get started as an investor in the commercial real estate market and help you gain profits from whichever method you choose.

Netflix online movie streaming revenue explodes, slices Apple share ...

Incredible gains in subscription-based online video-on-demand allowed Netflix to become the number one U.S. online movie service by revenue for 2011 after taking a deep cut into Apple's share of the market.

According to statistics?released?by research firm IHS, the company known for its red DVD-carrying envelopes grew its share of market revenue from less than one percent in 2010 to over 40 percent in 2011, enough to overtake former leader Apple and its iTunes service. It was reported in March 2011 that Apple only accounted for?4 percent?of the U.S. digital video market, but lead in terms of video sales.?

Revenue from subscription-based video-on-demand (SVOD) jumped to $454 million in 2011, representing an astounding 10,000 percent change from 2010's $4.3 million. SVOD subsequently became the most valuable sector of the U.S. online movie market, grossly outpacing the 75 percent revenue growth seen by transaction-based services like iTunes.

?We are in the midst of a significant change in the way people pay to consume movies online,? said Dan Cryan, research director for digital media at IHS. ?All the significant growth in revenue in the U.S. online movie business in 2011 was generated by rental business models, which provide temporary access, not permanent ownership. Rental delivers unlimited consumption with a low monthly fee for older titles as well as cheap rentals of new releases, providing the kind of value that online consumers want. In contrast, EST, which is much more profitable for studios on a per-transaction basis, is stuck in the doldrums.?

IHS Screen Digest June 2012 showed Apple's piece of the pie shrink from 60.8 percent in 2010 to 32.3 percent in 2011, a precipitous drop from the overwhelming 71.5 percent share iTunes enjoyed in 2009. While the iPad maker saw slight declines in 2009 and 2010, the company was well ahead of its closest competition Microsoft, which held 16.7 percent of the market two years ago and Netflix barely factored into the equation.?

Netflix's performance is largely based on a combination of the company's decision to directly charge for SVOD access and an overall consumer trend away from physical media services that allow customers an allotted number of DVD and Blu-Ray discs for a monthly fee. When Netflix flipped the switch on its subscription-based online streaming service reaction was minimal as it was included as part of the mail-order pacakge. Interest in SVOD increased, however, as new internet-connected TVs and set-top boxes debuted making it easier for customers to access content. Also playing a factor was the?backlash?from existing Netflix customers over an?attempted spin-off?of the company's mail service drove customers online.

?2011 marked a sea change in the online movies business that saw the balance of consumer spending shift from a DVD-like transactional model to more TV-like subscription approach,? Cryan said. ?The online movie business more than doubled in 2011 to reach $992 million and it is expected to double this year as well.?

Interestingly, the surge in SVOD has caused the online video market to split. Subscription-based services usually concentrate on older titles and TV shows while transaction-based solutions see a majority of its revenue come from new releases. The discrepancy in content stems from studio agreements, demographic targeting and market parity.

?Netflix and Apple are competing for some of the same consumer time and money. However, the core value proposition of the two services is actually very different," Cryan said.

Both Apple and Netflix are the top players in their respective arenas despite the iPad maker seeing a drop in transactional sales from?64.6 percent?in 2010 to 60 percent in 2011. Netflix rules the SVOD roost as the market share held by its closest competitor Hulu is some ten times smaller.

The amazing growth exhibited by the subscription-based streaming segment isn't expected to continue, however, as the tumult of the online movie market has seemingly calmed. With consumers comfortable in their respective SVOD and pay-per-unit camps, the only disruption could be the entry of a new player or arevolutionary product.

Cyber-battles raise fears of cyber-blowback

The Obama administration is warning American businesses about an unusually potent computer virus that infected Iran's oil industry even as suspicions persist that the United States is responsible for secretly creating and unleashing cyberweapons against foreign countries.

The government's dual roles of alerting U.S. companies about these threats and producing powerful software weapons and eavesdropping tools underscore the risks of an unintended, online boomerang.

Unlike a bullet or missile fired at an enemy, a cyberweapon that spreads across the Internet may circle back accidentally to infect computers it was never supposed to target. It's one of the unusual challenges facing the programmers who build such weapons, and presidents who must decide when to launch them.

The Homeland Security Department's warning about the new virus, known as "Flame," assured U.S. companies that no infections had been discovered so far inside the U.S. It described Flame as an espionage tool that was sophisticated in design, using encryption and other techniques to help break into computers and move through corporate or private networks. The virus can eavesdrop on data traffic, take screenshots and record audio and keystrokes. The department said the origin is a mystery.

The White House has declined to discuss the virus.

Suspicions heightened
But suspicions about the U.S. government's role in the use of cyberweapons were heightened by a report in Friday's New York Times . Based on anonymous sources, it said President Barack Obama secretly had ordered the use of another sophisticated cyberweapon, known as Stuxnet, to attack the computer systems that run Iran's main nuclear enrichment facilities. The order was an extension of a sabotage program that the Times said began during the Bush administration.

Private security researchers long have suspected that the U.S. and Israeli governments were responsible for Stuxnet. But the newspaper's detailed description of conversations in the Oval Office among Obama, the vice president and the CIA director about the U.S. government's responsibility for Stuxnet is the most direct evidence of this to date. U.S. officials rarely discuss the use of cyberweapons outside of classified settings.

Stuxnet is believed to have been released as early as 2009. It was discovered in June 2010 by a Belarusian antivirus researcher analyzing a customer's infected computer in Iran. It targeted electronic program controllers built by Siemens AG of Germany that were installed in Iran. The U.S. government also circulated warnings to American businesses about Stuxnet after it was detected.

The White House said Friday it would not discuss whether the U.S. was responsible for the Stuxnet attacks on Iran.

"I'm not able to comment on any of the specifics or details," White House spokesman Josh Earnest said. "That information is classified for a reason, and it is kept secret. It is intended not to be publicized because publicizing it would pose a threat to our national security."

Uncharted territory
Cyberweapons are uncharted territory because the U.S. laws are ambiguous about their use, and questions about their effectiveness and reliability are mostly unresolved. Attackers online can disguise their origins or even impersonate an innocent bystander organization, making it difficult to identify actual targets when responding to attacks.

Viruses and malicious software, known as malware, rely on vulnerabilities in commercial software and hardware products. But it is hard to design a single payload that always will succeed because the target may have fixed a software vulnerability or placed computers behind a firewall.

On the Internet, where being connected is a virtue, an attack intended for one target can spread unexpectedly. Whether a cyberweapon can boomerang depends on its state of the art, according to computer security experts. On that point, there are deep divisions over Flame.

Russian digital security provider Kaspersky Lab, which first identified the virus, said Flame's complexity and functionality "exceed those of all other cybermenaces known to date." There is no doubt, the company said, that a government sponsored the research that developed it. Yet Flame's author remains unknown because there is no information in the code of the virus that would link it to a particular country.

Other experts said it wasn't as fearsome.

'No secret sauce'
Much of the code used to build the virus is old and available on the Internet, said Becky Bace, chief strategist at the Center for Forensics, Information Technology and Security at the University of South Alabama. Flame could have been developed by a small team of smart people who are motivated and have financial backing, she said, making it just as likely a criminal enterprise or a group working as surrogates could have been responsible.

"Here's the wake-up call as far as cyber is concerned: You don't have to be a nation-state to have what it would take to put together a threat of this particular level of sophistication," said Bace, who spent 12 years at the National Security Agency working on intrusion detection and network security. "There's no secret sauce here."

Stuxnet was far more complex.

Still, Stuxnet could not have worked without detailed intelligence about Iran's nuclear program that was obtained through conventional spycraft, said Mikko Hypponen, chief research officer at F-Secure, a digital security company in Helsinki, Finland. The countries with the motivation and the means to gather that data are the United States and Israel, he said.

"This is at the level of complexity that very few organizations in the world would even attempt," said Hypponen, who has studied Stuxnet and Flame. "Basically you have to have moles. Most of what they needed to pull this off was most likely collected with what we would characterize as traditional intelligence work."

Collateral damage?
The more intricately designed a cyberweapon is, the less likely it will boomerang. Stuxnet spread well beyond the Iranian computer networks it was intended to hit. But the collateral damage was minimal because the virus was developed to go after very specific targets.

"When some of these super sophisticated things spread, it's bad but it may not have the same impact because the virus itself is so complex," said Jacob Olcott, a senior cybersecurity expert at Good Harbor Consulting. "It's designed to only have its impact when it finds certain conditions."

Israel is a world leader in cybertechnology and senior Israeli officials did little to deflect suspicion about that country's involvement in cyberweapons. "Whoever sees the Iranian threat as a significant threat is likely to take various steps, including these, to hobble it," said Vice Premier Moshe Yaalon, a former military chief and minister of strategic affairs.

A senior defense official involved in Israel's cyberwarfare program said Friday that, "Israel is investing heavily in units that deal with cyberwarfare both for defense and offense." He would not elaborate. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not allowed to speak with the media.

Isaac Ben-Israel, an adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on cybersecurity issues, declined Friday to say whether Israel was involved with Stuxnet.

It could take years to know who is responsible, which is what is so unsettling about attacks in cyberspace. "We are very good as an industry at figuring out what a piece of malware does," said Dave Marcus, director of advanced research and threat intelligence at digital security giant McAfee. "But we are less accurate when it comes to saying what group is responsible for it, or it came from this country or that organization."

Parrot Reacts to John Edwards Verdict

Seriously, legal system?

While the jury did its job in delivering yesterday's John Edwards verdict based on the (lack of) evidence, it's hard not to be frustrated when a shady character walks.

"Not guilty" doesn't mean he's innocent - a fact that Edwards basically admitted outside the courtroom yesterday, though he maintains no laws were broken).

Nevertheless, that's hardly a consolation for some observers. Even animals can't hide their disgust for the disgraced politician. Case in point? This parrot:

Johan Santana pitches first no-hitter in Mets' history

NEW YORK (AP) ? For more than 50 years, the New York Mets chased that elusive no-hitter. Johan Santana finally finished the job.

Santana pitched the first no-hitter in team history, helped by an umpire's missed call and an outstanding catch in left field in an 8-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night.

After a string of close calls over the last five decades, Santana went all the way in the Mets' 8,020th game.

"Finally, the first one," he said. "That is the greatest feeling ever."

He needed a couple of key assists to pull it off.

Carlos Beltran, back at Citi Field for the first time since the Mets traded him last July, hit a line drive over third base in the sixth inning that hit the foul line and should have been called fair. But third base umpire Adrian Johnson ruled it foul and the no-hitter was intact ? even though a replay clearly showed a mark where the ball landed on the chalk line.

"I saw the ball hitting outside the line, just foul," Johnson told a pool reporter.

The umpire acknowledged that he saw the replay afterward but declined to comment.

"It was in front of his face, and he called it foul. I thought it was a fair ball," Beltran said. "At the end of the day, one hit wasn't going to make a difference in the ballgame. We needed to score more runs and we didn't do that."

Hometown kid Mike Baxter then made a tremendous catch in left field to rob Yadier Molina of extra bases in the seventh. Baxter crashed into the wall, injured his shoulder and left the game.

Making his 11th start since missing last season following shoulder surgery, Santana (3-2) threw a career-high 134 pitches in his second consecutive shutout. Relying on a sneaky fastball and the baffling changeup that's always been his signature, he struck out eight and walked five.

"Amazing," Santana said after tossing the majors' third no-hitter this year. "Coming into this season I was just hoping to come back and stay healthy and help this team, and now I am in this situation in the greatest city for baseball."

Before the game, Mets manager Terry Collins said he planned to limit Santana to 110-115 pitches all season.

"I just couldn't take him out," a choked-up Collins said afterward.

Born in 1962, the Mets have been built on pitching when they've fielded their best teams. But neither Nolan Ryan, Tom Seaver nor Dwight Gooden could throw a no-hitter for the Mets ? though all three are among the seven pitchers who tossed one after leaving the team.

Philip Humber is another one. He pitched a perfect game for the Chicago White Sox at Seattle on April 21, and Jered Weaver of the Los Angeles Angels no-hit Minnesota on May 2.

Following the game, Santana addressed his teammates in the clubhouse. He thanked them and said: "Yeah, baby! Believe it!"

Santana got a warm ovation as he headed out to the mound for the ninth inning, and the two-time Cy Young Award winner quickly retired Matt Holliday and Allen Craig on shallow fly balls.

With the crowd of 27,069 on its feet in a frenzy, World Series MVP David Freese went to a 3-2 count before his foul tip was caught by Josh Thole, just activated from the disabled list earlier in the day.

Santana pumped his left fist and slammed it into his glove as Thole showed the ball to plate umpire Gary Cederstrom and then went running out toward the mound.

"I don't think anybody expected that tonight. Everything came out perfect for him," Beltran said. "It should mean a lot for him after battling last year with the injuries. ... I'm not happy about it, but at the same time he's a good man and I'm happy for him."

The Mets rushed out of the dugout and mobbed Santana in a raucous dogpile as security tackled a fan who ran onto the field near home plate. Moments later, the pitcher raised his right arm and saluted the crowd, which was chanted his name from the eighth inning on. The big scoreboard in center flashed Santana's picture and read "No-Han."

"It was a crazy night ? my fastball moving all over the place," Santana said. "I don't think I've ever thrown a no-hitter in video games."

The Cardinals should have had a hit in the sixth.

Beltran, traded by the Mets to San Francisco last July after 6? rocky seasons in New York, led off with a low liner over third. Television replays showed the ball nicked the foul line just behind the bag on the dirt, taking a small chunk of chalk with it. But Johnson called it foul immediately and Beltran eventually grounded out.

"It was tough because it happened so quick. I wasn't able to see anything," Santana said.

"The umpire made his call and that was the end of it," he said.

But with the next batter at the plate, Cardinals third base coach Jose Oquendo twice got in Johnson's face for heated arguments ? the two even appeared to bump each other. Rookie manager Mike Matheny also came out to protest, but nobody was ejected.

Almost exactly two years ago ? on June 2, 2010 ? Armando Galarraga lost a perfect game when first base umpire Jim Joyce admittedly blew a call that should've resulted in the final out. The miss in Detroit instead gave Cleveland's Jason Donald a single with two outs in the ninth.

Major League Baseball had considered expanding replay for this season to review fair-or-foul calls and trapped balls. The change required the approval of MLB and the unions representing the umpires and the players ? when there was no agreement, extra replay was postponed until at least 2013.

Santana cruised from there into the seventh, when Molina hit a one-out drive to deep left. Baxter, who grew up rooting for the Mets only 10 minutes from where Citi Field stands, raced back and made a terrific catch before crashing full force into the fence.

Baxter stayed down on the warning track as Mets trainers, players and coaches rushed out to him. Santana crouched in the infield with a couple of teammates and then made a few warmup tosses to stay loose.

Baxter walked off the field under his own power, with trainer Ray Ramirez holding the outfielder's left arm. The Mets said Baxter has a bruised left shoulder and was having more tests.

"When I saw him running back onto the warning track and he made that play, it was amazing. An outstanding play and he saved the game," said Santana, traded to the Mets by Minnesota before the 2008 season. "All these guys, I want to thank them for what we accomplished."

Lucas Duda hit a three-run homer off Adam Wainwright (4-6) and drove in four runs, tying a career high. Daniel Murphy added three RBIs.

The San Diego Padres, who started play in 1969, are now the only team without a no-hitter.

The Mets' seemingly endless pursuit had become something of a famous quest, with at least one website even dedicated to counting off their total number of games without one each day during the season.

The list of pitchers who have thrown no-hitters after leaving the Mets includes Ryan and Seaver, both Hall of Famers, plus Gooden, David Cone, Mike Scott, Hideo Nomo and Humber.

Seaver came within two outs of a perfect game in 1969 and fell one out shy of a no-hitter in 1975, the previous time a Mets pitcher had made it into the ninth without yielding a hit.

NOTES: Santana's previous career high was 125 pitches. ... It was the eighth no-hitter pitched against St. Louis, which was leading the NL in batting this season, and the first since Fernando Valenzuela for the Los Angeles on June 29, 1990. ... Mets 3B David Wright said in a radio interview on WFAN that he won't talk to the team about a new contract until after the season because he doesn't want his situation to be a distraction for the team. Wright's salary is $15 million this season and New York holds a $16 million option for 2013, which gets voided if he is traded. After that, he can become a free agent. ... Replays showed Cardinals pinch-hitter Shane Robinson was hit on the hand by a pitch in the eighth. He started toward first, but Cederstrom called it a ball.
